Digestive Enzymes: Why Are They Important?

We eat food, but our digestive system doesn’t absorb food, it absorbs nutrients. Food must be broken down from things like steak and broccoli into its nutrient pieces: amino acids (from proteins), fatty acids and cholesterol (from fats), and simple sugars (from carbohydrates), as well as vitamins, minerals, and a variety of other plant and animal compounds. Digestive enzymes, primarily produced in the pancreas and small intestine, break down our food into nutrients so that our bodies can absorb them.

If we don’t have enough digestive enzymes, we can’t break down our food—which means even though we’re eating well, we aren’t absorbing all that good nutrition.

Here are a few reasons you should start taking digestive enzymes:

1. Leaky Gut

Leaky gut is when the intestinal cells are unable to do their job to digest carbohydrates and transport nutrients into your body. It’s a result of your intestinal cells not being as healthy as they should, and instead undigested food leaks between cells where your immune system is on guard.

Enzymes give your body support to digest your food and prevent inflammatory responses. This is highly beneficial because your body becomes more likely to absorb the nutrients and allowing your body to heal your intestinal lining.

2. Stress

If often seems unavoidable for most of us. Stress comes in various waves and degrees. When you’re stressed, your body tends to slow down and decrease its production of digestive enzymes.

Luckily, taking digestive enzymes can be useful for your physical, mental, or emotional health when going through a stressful period. Doing so can help make up for the reduced enzyme production and provide your body with support as it works hard to cope with other issues.

3. Anxiety, Depression, Memory Loss, and Sleep Disorders

Inflammation in the gut leads to inflammation in the nervous system, and this can have serious effects on our mood, sleeping patterns, and memory.

To improve your mood and mind, increase your neurotransmitter production, and decrease inflammation in your nervous system. Taking digestive enzymes can help you attain both.

4. Irritable Bowel Syndrome

When your food is not completely digested, it ends up feeding bacteria in your gut causing an imbalance in gut bacteria. Overgrowing bacteria produces gas, leading to IBS symptoms (bloating, cramping, diarrhea, and gas).

The first step in healing IBS is ensuring your food is fully digested and taking digestive enzymes can help. Doing so will help you absorb nutrients instead of giving them to overgrowing bacteria.
